5 Tax Advantages of a Home-Based Business

The perks of a home-based business are many: freedom, independence, tax advantages ... yes, tax advantages. Here are some tax advantages that your home based business may qualify for.

1. Home Office

The home office is one of the best-known tax advantages for a home based business, and for good reason. You can deduct a percentage of most household bills (mortgage or rent, utilities, property taxes, insurance, phone and Internet bills) based on the percentage of your house that is represented by your home office.

It's important to accurately calculate the square footage of your home office, and if possible, to devote a separate room to your home office. IRS publication 334, Tax Guide for Small Business, is helpful in determining details on home office deductions.

2. Office Expenses

Any improvements or repairs to your home office are deductible as business expenses. For instance, if you paint your home office, the costs are deductible. However, these improvements must be related to the office itself. Landscaping expenses, for example, are not deductible, even if they are for landscaping outside of the home office.

3. Business Expenses

Many home based business expenses are tax deductible. A partial list includes:

• traveling and meal expenses related to business(check with the IRS for specific guidelines on deduction limits)
• transportation used for business purposes - you can deduct mileage traveled for business at a per-mile amount
• tax preparation fees for your home based business
• education expenses for classes you take to improve your business skills
• software purchased to use for your business

4. Other Expenses

All the items you need for your business - beads for your jewelry business, fabric for your dressmaking business, a computer for your tutoring business - are deductible as business expenses. Depending on your type of business, these can add up quickly.

5. Family Employees

Hire your responsible teenage son to keep inventory for your business, or your teenage daughter to walk dogs for your dog-sitting business. This results in an additional business expense deduction for you, as well as income for your child. Be sure to document all the hours worked by family members (or any employee you hire) in case you are ever audited.

Many home based businesses use IRS Schedule C to report income and expenses. All of the expenses listed above will be subtracted from your business income, most likely lowering your taxable income significantly (which is good, since your net income is what you will be taxed on).

*A key for home businesses is accurate record keeping. You want to be prepared to turn over a neat log of all business expenses, complete with dates, amounts and confirming documents when appropriate, in case of an audit.

With your records in hand, your home business will be in good shape to reap maximum benefit from our tax system. Use the rules to your advantage to ensure as much profit as possible for your home based business.

You need to track mileage for anything you did with the business, including driving to training, meetings, meeting a customer or ambassador for any reason, shopping for things for your business. Your mileage should be written down in a journal/calendar/notebook. Make a quick note in the calendar in your phone where you went and why. There are actually apps available to track your mileage.

 

Keep all receipts for your meals, any supplies, business cards, copies/printing, ink cartridges, meeting refreshments, booth rental fees, electronics used for business like computer/tablet, etc,  product that you did not personally use like Decision Packs or Fast Relief Lotion you carry with you.

 

Calculate the square footage of the living quarters of the house and the square footage of your working area.

Calculate and get copies of total utilities gas & electricity, house taxes, insurance, phone bill, all amounts from time you started your business. 

 

If you use you debit card you can highlight income and expenses. 

What to send to those who only order slim

First things first, congrats! What a huge step in getting healthy!!! I am so proud and excited for you! 

Ok now to the good stuff!

Your Plexus Slim is on its way! So between now and the minute you receive it there are a few things I want you to do!
•weigh
•measure 
     * arms
     * thighs 
     * waist (at belly button)
     * hips
     * bust
•take before and after pictures (you do NOT have to share these with me unless you want to)
•write down things you suffer with (allergies, migraines, tight fitting clothes, over eating, etc. nothing is too small to put on this list) 

Write all of these things down and then I want you to hide your scale. Hide it good! You won't see it for a good week or two! 

Ok now your Plexus Slim is at your house! Yay!!!!! So exciting! 
Get a water bottle, I honestly recommend a shaker bottle it breaks the powder up better. If you are using a water bottle, make sure it's filled up about 3/4 of the way. If you are using a shaker bottle, add 12-16oz. Use room temp water. Add your slim and shake it up until the powder is mixed up! Add ice if you want it cold! 

You can do this at any time of the day. I do it first thing in the morning! 

Now here is the "hard part"! Drinking half your body weight in water. 
200lbs= 100oz of WATER = 6 bottles of water daily. Sounds crazy hard right?! It's pretty easy. 1 bottle with breakfast (I count my slim as this bottle) 1 between breakfast and lunch. 1 at lunch. 1 between lunch and dinner. 1 with dinner. 1 before bed. That's how I break it down. It's easier for me to remember this way, but this is not how YOU have to do it. It is ok if you work up to it, but by the end of week 1 you need to be drinking half your weight in water (oz). You'll be amazed at how much better you feel! 

Ok so it's day 15! Time to weigh!!! Write this number down, and continue drinking your slim!!! I will check up with you and remind you on day 14 to weigh, no worries! Then you can send your scale back in to hiding! I will also remind you what day your autoship will go out and give you tips on how to change it if you need to. 

Day 30!!! Weigh, measure, take pictures and compare your list with what you feel now. You did it! You completed your first month on Slim! Remember if you are discouraged that Plexus guarantees your purchases for 60 days. So DO NOT GIVE UP!

Suggested Guidelines and Etiquette for Trade Shows / Vendor Fairs
Before the Event
• You MUST be well read on the products so you can discuss them freely.  If you cannot do that, you trade show success will be limited
• When booking a trade show it is always a good idea to ask if there is already a Plexus Ambassador there.  If the trade show is an exclusive show then they will only allow one booth.  If it is not exclusive and another Plexus member is already booked, then you need to decide if the show is big enough for two.
• Save your empty product bottles and Slim packaging so you can use them to create a display. 
• You will need signage to draw people in.  You do not have to spend a lot of money on this, but it needs to be professional.
Make it colorful and simple
The official Plexus Slim and Independent Ambassador logos are in back office under “Resources” then under “Artwork” 
There are also swag sites to order from (e.g.www.plexusmall.com or Plexus Shirts on Facebook)
All your marketing must say "the most natural" NOT "all-natural"
Having framed before and after pictures is a great too – especially if you have one of yourself
• Consider having some sort of giveaway which will allow you tocollect names, phone numbers, and emails from everyone that stops at your booth.  
A small investment in an attention getting giveaway willbe worth to get a big list of PROSPECTS.
Have clipboards with several copies of a pre-printed slip of paper for prospects fill out that will capture name and email address.  Visitors fill that out to be entered into the drawing.
Have pens.  You can order Plexus pens from your back office.
• Consider offering samples so people can taste Plexus.  IF you do this you will need a supply of Slim, a pitcher, water and sample cups. You may want to mix up a couple of gallons in advance so all you have to do at the event is pour.
• Stock up on Plexus Slim and 3 and 7 day trials.  Those are very sellable at an event.
• Secure a laptop, a kindle or iPad etc., so that you can connect to the internet to pull up your website in case someone wants to order or join (and they will).  You can also use these to play Plexus videos (e.g. Opportunity of a Lifetime).
• Have a huge supply of your business cards
• Have a big supply of Plexus Brochures
Some people will make a decision on the spot and order, others want to take something away and think about it.  
The brochures you can purchase from your back office are relatively cheap.
Buy Avery mailing labels.  Print out the labels with your name, website and phone number. Place these labels on EVERYTHING (the slim brochures, product catalogs and trial packs.
• Have a few laminated copies of the Compensation Plan summary and Product Pricing summary for when someone is interested in talking about being an ambassador. 
• If you plan to sell product at the event
Have a good supply of change for cash transactions 
Have a credit card reader you can use with your tablet, computer, or phone.  IF you are accepting credit cards, have a sign that lets people know you accept VISA, Mastercard, etc. 
Consider running a show special (e.g. two 3 day packs for $10).  If you do run a special, you will need to have a sign advertising the special as part of your set-up.
• Consider having a helper or doing an event with a small group of ambassadors.  If you are by yourself, you could get overwhelmed with people wanting a sample, wanting to buy, asking questions, etc.
At the Event
• NEVER MAKE A MEDICAL CLAIM
All your marketing must say "the most natural" NOT "the all-natural"
• Bring a small garbage can with bags for the cups; roll of paper towels; scissors; scotch tape; duct tape; ink pens; straight pins; push pins; bags to put products they purchase.
• It is very BENEFICIAL to have slim for the people to sample. It taste so good and really draws people in.
• Use a tablecloth (if not provided).  You can get hot pink plastic disposable ones from Dollar Tree. 
• Set up a display of all the products we sell using empty slim bags and empty bottles 
• Use tabletop easels to display signs, before and after pics, etc.  Plate holders work well for this.
• Make sure you keep your table stocked with business cards and brochures
• Hand a brochure (with your info neatly labeled on the back) to everyone who passes your booth.  
• If you are having a giveaway, invite people to complete a sign-up sheet and drop it into the “Prize drawing Box” 
If you are working the event with a team, agree beforehand how you will share the prospects. 
▪ If it is based on who talked to a prospect, then put your initials on that slip of paper so at the end of the show that prospect goes to you
▪ If you agree that all leads will be share, you can divide them up at the end.
▪ Everyone at the booth has paid there share to be there, be courteous about letting everyone get a chance a new clients.  If it is slow take turns.  Just remember not to have too many ambassadors share a booth.
Write in notes on the back to jog your memory about that person (diabetic, wants to lose __lbs, has high blood pressure, works at, etc)
• Etiquette recommendations for the event.
Everyone get there early and help with setting up.
Everyone stay until the end and help with take down.
Even if you prepaid for the booth there may be other expenses generated to run the booth such as: Door prizes, cups, water, table cloths, etc.  Expect to share in that cost!  
Do not go around before the show leaving brochures on all the vendor booths, they have paid for their booths and do not want your literature on their tables.
If someone initiates the conversation and you join in that conversation, that client goes to the one that made the contact (unless you agreed beforehand to divide up all the leads at the end
Be prompt in paying the person in charge your share of the booth.
If you have not paid to be in that specific trade show and your fellow ambassadors have, please don’t go in and start passing out brochures. 
If you are a trade show for another business, it is not fair for you to display your plexus product at that show especially if that show was exclusive for the Plexus booth. The person in charge will ask you to stop or you will be reported to the show sponsors.
Let’s keep the Golden Rule in mind.  Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.  This works in all aspects of life!  
The person in charge of the booth should have the final say on any misunderstandings.
After the show
• Always follow up after a show. Send thank you email for visiting booth and include the information you would normally send to an interested prospectThis is the whole point of collecting names.

Ask people if you can share your business card with them? Probably 8 times out of 10 they will ask for you to tell them more. Try to give out at least 2 business cards a day.

 

Network marketing is called relationship marketing. The way you approach people is very important. Be ready to listen to people and know what their needs are. If you are in your business to build relationships and truly help people you will be successful. If you are only in Plexus for a quick sale you will not be very successful.

 

Knowledge is power. The more you know the more you grow!!!! Take advantage of all the training calls and training meetings.

 

If you don’t have commitment with your business you will not be successful. 

 

If you don’t believe in the products you will not be successful. Commit to taking the products everyday as you would have your customers do.

 

Becoming a Plexus Ambassador means becoming a business owner. I know that your facebook page is "YOUR" personal page to do with as you please. Just remember that what you post on your page WILL reflect your Plexus business. You are representing your business. It is best to keep your page clean and positive. People are watching. Make a good impression:)

 

You can work your business part time but not sometimes. Consistency is KEY. Be motivated, if you don’t do anything, nothing will happen.

 

Fortune is in the follow up!!! Follow up with customers and ambassadors!! 

There is NEVER a right time toc all potential or active ambassadors or customers. So when you think about it DO IT, don't make excuses. Must educate all customers on how to start off taking Plexus products (accelerator). Must keep in touch will your customers and make sure they are doing ok and don't have any questions. Happy customers turn into Ambassadors.  Must educate all new Ambassadors you sign, train your downline!!!! HUGE KEY TO BEING SUCCESSFUL IS TRAINING YOUR DOWNLINE!!!  You can NEVER get to much training!! Hold meetings and conference calls with your downline. If you don't understand how things work have them get in contact with your upline

There will be weeks and months that are slower than others. If someone is interested in becoming an Ambassador and wants more info don’t just send info to them. Contact them and go over all the wonderful advantages of becoming an Ambassador. Discuss the breakdown of the compensation plan with them at that time. Let them know how amazing Plexus Worldwide treats us! Them hearing all this from you VS reading a message makes a HUGE difference!

 

Find out if they are wanting to become an Ambassador just to get product at wholesale or if they are wanting to promote to make money. If they say only to get product at cost tell them that if they sale to a few family members and a few friends that they could also bring in extra money while getting product at wholesale. Even selling to just a FEW people brings in money that covers the cost of their product so they will be really getting it for free:) 

 

Tell the potential Ambassador that for just about the same price as a month supply of product as a retail customer they can have their own PLEXUS business, get a month supply of product, get product at wholesale anytime they order AND have a PLEXUS website for a year! If they are just looking for a little extra income that is fine or making enough to quit their job....that is even better:) Let them know if they are on facebook throughout the day they can be successful.  10 mins a day to devote to their business in sharing about Plexus is not asking for a lot.  

 

Tell them RIGHT AWAY that “YOU” will help them get started. YOU will give them all the resources that they need (which are all in the group pages under files). Let them know they will not be left in the dark, that you are always there for them. Also let them know that training conference calls and meetings are available.
